Here's how it works...

There are three phases to the South Beach Diet™, which although it looks similar to the Atkins Diet, it is very different. 

Phase 1 - Quick Start

Phase 1 lasts the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet™.  During this period of time you'll learn how to eat in a new way. Whether you only need to lose a few pounds or you are working on a major weight-loss goal, Phase 1 offers a realistic and delicious way to start losing your extra pounds.

During Phase 1 you'll enjoy normal-size helpings of lean meats and seafood (like chicken, beef, fish, and shrimp). You're diet will include plenty of vegetables, eggs, cheese, and nuts. You'll also have salads with delicious olive oil in the dressing. During Phase 1 you'll have three well balanced meals a day. You'll eat tasty foods that you enjoy and satisfy your hunger.

You'll also have snacks twice a day, and you can have dessert after dinner. You can drink diet sodas, and you can even eat at restaurants!

What you won't eat during Phase 1: For the first 14 days you are on the diet you won't have any bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, or baked goods. And, no fruit.

Don't panic! You'll begin adding those things back into your diet again at the end of the first two weeks you are on the diet. But during Phase 1, these foods are not allowed. In addition, you won't eat candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, or sugar for the first two weeks. No beer, wine or alcohol, either. After this first phase, though, you'll be free to drink wine again and you'll enjoy a wide variety of desserts.

Although it sounds as if it may be difficult, you're going to be shocked at how painlessly two weeks will pass without these foods. The first day or two may be challenging as you learn a new way to approach food; but after that, it will seem like the only way to eat.  And you'll be eating the foods that you enjoy.

Phase 2 - Continued Weight Loss

What you'll eat during Phase 2: During Phase 1 you rebalanced your diet and body, but at this time you'll be able to bring back a number of foods. You'll still be losing weight, but you'll start adding bread pasta, rice, cereal, and potatoes back into your diet in a healthy way. You'll also be allowed certain fruits, wine, and even chocolate. The South Beach Diet™ teaches you exactly which carbs are good and which are bad. You'll can now make the smart-carbs a part of your everyday meals!

You'll continue  with Phase 2, eating all the delicious foods you love, until you reach your target weight. How long it takes depends on how much you need to lose. When you reach your target, you'll be able to bring back even more foods during the next Phase, and eat in a way to keep your weight exactly where you want it.

Phase 3 - Maintenance
